Top logistics academics to launch unique ESTA industry study

Two of Europe’s top logistics experts will present an exclusive and unique report into the economic impact of the heavy lifting and transport industry at ESTA’s 50th anniversary conference in October.

Eleonora Bottani is a Professor at the Department of Engineering for Industrial Systems and Technologies of the University of Parma in Italy.

She holds a doctorate in industrial engineering, teaches industrial logistics and her research focusses on logistics and supply chain management. Professor Bottani has also been listed as one of the top two per cent of scientists worldwide.

She will be joined by her colleague Dr Laura Monferdini, an Adjunct Professor of Lean Management researching industrial and management engineering.

Commissioned by ESTA and carried out by the University of Parma in Italy, the report will analyse the sector’s strategic importance and economic value, combined with insights from leading industry practitioners.

The study will support the work of ESTA and our members in discussions with regulators and politicians in the European Union and national governments by underlining the strategic economic importance of the work carried out by the industry.

This is the first time that such a study has been carried out since 2013, and the first to involve independent academic support.

ESTA argues that the industry and the wider markets it serves have changed significantly in the past 13 years – for example with new technologies, the rise of renewable energy and the growing push for increased investment to support Europe’s military capabilities.

For the study, data was collected from ESTA members and selected client organisations. The results were then analysed and supplemented by additional analysis. carried out in the University of Parma’s Department of Engineering for Industrial Systems and Technologies.

ESTA Director Miguel Flórez de la Colina explained: “The heavy lifting and abnormal transport sector is becoming increasingly important to European industry and policy makers as our members play a crucial role in numerous strategically essential industries.

“This study will both help to explain our significance and also ensure that future new national and European policies and regulations are appropriate for our members and their clients.”

Notes:
Running from 13.00 to 17.30, the conference takes place on October 23 at the Okura Hotel on Ferdinand Bolstraat in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and will be followed by ESTA’s 50th Anniversary dinner, a special evening dedicated to celebrating 50 years of ESTA and the people behind our industry.

The conference programme will also include sessions on the electric crane revolution, reform of European regulations, the latest best practice guidance and ESTA’s plans to develop a European Trailer Operator Licence.

A further highlight will be ESTA’s work to create an incidents sharing scheme similar to the one that operates in the airline industry, and which allows the wider industry to understand and learn from them.
