Warning to heavy transport companies of key German bridge closure

ESTA’s German association member BSK is warning European heavy transport companies of the federal highway authorities’ plans to close the country’s A27 motorway near Bremen from next year due to bridge replacement work – and that no easy diversions will be available as local roads are not strong enough.

The 150-kilometre A27 motorway is a vital route for logistics, and especially heavy transport, to and from the North Sea ports in Bremerhaven and Cuxhaven.

Two structures are being replaced. Known as the Leher Heerstraße bridge, they were built in 1937 and 1971 and carry an average of 57,000 vehicles a day including 5,000 trucks.

Planning is underway with soil investigations due to start in February. Construction work is currently scheduled to begin in 2027.

Germany’s federal motorway company Autobahn GmbH has said that a detour through the Weser Tunnel might be possible for vehicles and loads up to approximately 130 tonnes – but that no other options will be possible as other roads are not designed to cope with heavy loads.
